Prophecy Editorial Review
When Prophecy Fails is a seminal work by Leon Festinger, co-authored with Henry Riecken and Stanley Schachter, focusing on the psychological phenomenon of cognitive dissonance through the lens of a religious cult anticipating a catastrophic flood that would fail to materialize. The book provides insights into how group dynamics and personal beliefs can lead individuals to maintain faith despite contradictions, exemplifying how the members' fervor increased when their prophecy did not come true. This research serves as a prime example of participant observation methodology and remains relevant for understanding the impact of commitment and social pressure on belief systems.
