- MATLAB, que responde a la abreviatura de MATrix LABoratory, constituye hoy en día una herramienta matemática muy potente que posibilita un cálculo avanzado de cualquier procesamiento matemático que se tenga que realizar a partir de un mode-lado previo. Esta herramienta matemática es de uso hoy en día habitual en cualquier titulación científica o técnica, en particular en las relaciones con los estudios relativos a la ingeniería. En este sentido, constituye un software utilizado en multitud de uni-versidades y centros de investigación de todo el mundo y de temática muy diversa. Entre las principales prestaciones que ofrece Matlab se puede citar la manipulación de matrices, la representación gráfica que ofrece a partir de un conjunto de alternativas sencillas de utilizar y manipular, así como la posibilidad de creación de interfaces de usuario que encapsulen los programas que se realicen dentro del propio entorno de programación. Matlab incorpora multitud de librerías y herramientas específicas de tratamiento de datos en multiples campos tanto científicos como relacionados con al ingeniería. A partir de estas librerías y herramientas proporcionadas por Matlab, es posible además realizar y desarrollar algoritmos específicos de más alto nivel de una forma rápida y sencilla mediante el uso del lenguaje específico que proporciona. En este texto se proporciona una visión general de la herramienta Matlab, estable-ciendo los conceptos básicos de la misma y prestando un especial interés a las diferentes posibilidades existentes en la manipulación y representación gráfica de los datos. Se ha intentado que en la medida de lo posible el texto pueda ser fácilmente seguido por cualquier persona aún cuando no haya adquirido previamente conceptos de progra-mación. De esta forma, el texto se configura en tres grandes temáticas: una primera con una introducción a Matlab, donde se revisan las generalidades y la representación de datos en esta herramienta; un segundo capítulo dedicado a la programación en lenguaje propio de Matlab presentando la sintaxis así como las principales estructuras de control de los programas; y por último un amplio capítulo dedicado a las múltiples formas de representación gráfica que soporta Matlab. El texto en definitiva permite al no iniciado introducirse en la herramienta Mat-lab, para a partir de entonces poder sacarle el máximo partido a esta herramienta independientemente de cuál sea su campo de conocimiento.
