You cannot separate the top and bottom jaw pieces. Although the teeth are connected and floss cannot go between them, the model can still be used to demonstrate how to use floss. The teeth are fused together which means they cannot be flossed, but this can be used to explain that some people's teeth are close together. Toothpaste can be put on it without any issue. The Consumer who used it on a mission trip in Central America cleaned it with gauze and alcohol after each use. The product is very well made and detailed, and one would definitely recommend it for educational purposes. However, some reviewers have reported breaking and missing screws which is not safe and could be a choking hazard for young children.
